Hey Sweet Peeps,

This is probably my fave shape Batman cookies as he is so cute but still looks cool and awesome at the same time! I think he looks like either a Chibi Batman or Kawaii Batman...but either way he is my favorite 😋
Picture
These cookies are super awesome if you are planning to throw a Batman themed birthday party or any Superheroes theme party. So learn how to make these Batman cookies decorated with royal icing.

If you want to know how to make royal icing, our recipe is available in the recipe section so head over and check it out.

Also just a note to say that I always mark the designs in the cookies with an edible pen and I use a Pico projector as a guide to draw the areas in the cookies.

If you want to know more about the tools and resources that we use, we have listed everything along with the link to where you can buy them in the description box of our videos.

Have a sweet day and happy decorating!

Cookie Tutorial Update

26/9/2017

Hey sweet peeps, firstly i want to apology for the lack of update on this blog as I realised that it has been sadly neglected this year. So I thought i would do a quick update here on what we have been up to :)

We have been focusing on creating video tutorial this year and we are proud to say that we finally launched our YouTube channel! Yay!! *happy dance*

There has been a lot of behind the scene preparation work to get our channel off the ground, and we are really happy to say that it is growing steadily and our follower numbers are increasing :)

Because of the time that it takes to create and edit the video tutorials, we are not able to continue to do both photo tutorials here as well as video tutorials at the same time.....i really wish we can do both, but the reality is that we just don't have enough time on the day to do everything that we would like to.

At the end of the day we have to decide on what we want to do going forward, and we have decided to continue creating video tutorials as really enjoyed creating them and we feel that we can people can learn more clearly by watching our videos than from looking at photo tutorials.

So from now on, we will start sharing our video tutorials here as well as showing you what the cookies will look like in a photo.

Hope you will learn a lot from our videos and feel free to come visit us in our other social networks via Instagram, Facebook or YouTube.

Here is our most recent video tutorial on how to make Sesame Street decorated cookies.

Enjoy & happy decorating!

xoxo

Tribal Boho Theme Cookies

27/11/2016

We are aware that this blog have been sadly neglected for the past few months. So we are making the effort to give you the latest update :) These are the latest cookies we made for Claudia's birthday and she has specifically requested a 'Boho theme' cookies, so we had so much fund creating these for her :)
Picture
We didn't get a chance to take photo tutorial for all the cookie designs but we choose a select few to show you here. If you would rather see a video tutorial for the majority of these boho cookies design please check out our Instagram account HERE.

Okay the first photo tutorial is for the dream catcher. We didn't have a specific dream catcher cookie cutter so in this case we used a sandal/flip-flop cutter.

Step 1: Flood the base of the cookie with white flood icing.

Step 2: Draw a circle on the top area with an edible marker and mark off the areas for the inside of the circle as well as for the feathers.

Step 3: With an outline consistency brown icing and a small piping tip ( we used PME tip 1 for this) pipe the inside of the circle first - see the first picture below.

Step 4: Use the same brown icing to pipe the squiggly outer section of the dream catcher.

Step 5: Using the same brown icing pipe the bottom park where the feathers are going to be filled.

Step 6: Use an outline consistency icing with different pastel colours add the feathers in small lines resembling an arrow  and also use a green outline consistency icing to make the green leaf on each side of the dream catcher - see picture below.

Step 7: Add a royal icing roses into the middle of the leaf and with gold edible dust (we used Rolkem Super gold for this) dust the yellow part to make the gold accent - see picture below.

If you would rather like to see video tutorial so can clearly see the step by step details on how to make this dream catcher, you can view it HERE.
Picture
Here is what they all look like when we finished decorating with matching arrow cookies :)
Picture

Next one is the flower teepee cookies. We love this design so much as they turned out so pretty :)
Here is a simple photo tutorial on how to make them:

Step 1: With medium consistency peach colour icing fill the triangle area and fill the entrance of the tepee with a cream colour icing - see the first picture below.

Step 2: Use an edible marker to make off the area for the teepee outline - see the middle picture below.

Step 3: Use an outline consistency brown icing to pipe the outline of the teepee (see last picture below) and use an outline consistency cream icing to create the cream dotted area and hearts at the bottom of the teepee.

Step 4: add royal transfer rose and a couple of fondant flowers on top and then add the green leaves by piping then on the sides of the flowers using PME tip 1.5

If you would like to see a video tutorial on how to make this step by step, you can view it HERE.

If you like our pretty flower teepee design, you can now purchase the cookie cutters at Say it with sweetness online shop - link to Kate's shop HERE.
Picture
The next one is a quick ohoto tutorial on our lace teepee.

Step 1: Start off the same way as our flower teepee, with medium consistency blue colour icing fill the triangle area and fill the entrance of the tepee with a cream colour icing - see the first picture below.

Step 2: Use an edible marker to make off the area for the teepee outline - see the middle picture below.

Step 3: Use an outline consistency blue icing to pipe the outline of the teepee (see last picture below) and then attach the sugar lace on top of the teepee using either an edible glue or in our case we used a clear corn syrup.

Step 4: add the royal icing roses at the bottom of the teepee as well as the three tiny fondant flowers on top of the teepee - see last picture below.

If you would like to see a step by step video tutorial on how to make this, you can view it HERE.

If you like our pretty lace teepee design, you can now purchase the cookie cutters at Say it with sweetness online shop - link to Kate's shop HERE.
Picture
Here is what they both looked like after we finished decorating them :)
Picture
We didn't get a chance to take any photo tutorial for the cookie with the writing but we'll show you a closer look at them, as we really love all the gold accent and writing in this set :)
Picture
Okay so there you go,hope you enjoyed seeing all this tutorial. If you would like to see a wider range of video tutorials on these cookies please make sure to visit our Instagram account - Cookielicious NZ.

Have a great week everyone! ;-)

Teacher's thank you cookies

24/9/2016

Yesterday was the last day of school for this term and Logan made a special request to say thank you to his class teacher. He wants me to make a small cookie gift to give to his teacher as he has really enjoyed having her as his class teacher this year :)

His request was pretty last minute, but because it was so sweet and thoughtful, I managed to squeezed in his request and finished the cookies the day before yesterday.

He was really happy and proudly brought these cookies to school for his teacher yesterday :)
Picture
I love decorating the apple with banner, the icing was so puffy and shiny when they were wet :P
I have taken the step by step photos below.

Step 1: With medium consistency red icing, fill the top and bottom part of the apple and while the icing is still wet, use a white medium consistency icing to make polkadots, let it dry.

Step 2: Fill the middle area with white medium consistency icing - see the second picture below, and let it dry for 5-10mins.
Picture
Step 3: Continue to fill the rest of the white banner on each side with the same white icing, and let it dry
Step 4: With outline consistency white icing outline the outter sides of the banners to give it more dimension. It also makes the banner popped a bit :)
Step 5: With black outline consistency icing, write the teacher's name in the middle of the banner.
Picture
For the pencil, it was pretty straight forward:

Step 1: Use cream colour medium consistency icing to fill the top of the pencil, and use a grey colour medium consistency icing to fill the area between the body of the pencil and the eraser - see the first picture on the far left side below.

Step 2: Fill the body of the pencil with yellow medium consistency icing and with the same 'wet on wet' technique like the apple, dotted white medium consistency icing all around the yellow icing while the yellow icing is still wet.

Step 3: Fill the eraser part with pink medium consistency icing.

Step 4: Use a black edible pen to colour in the tip of the pencil, and with an outline consistency grey icing put the squiggle lines in the grey part of the pencil.

Step 5: Lastly, pipe the 'thank you' writing in the middle with black outline consistency icing.
Picture
Logan happily report that the gift was very well received and his teacher was delighted with his sweet and thoughtful gift. I hope she likes the taste of the cookie too :) I was told that she will save some to enjoy during the school holidays ;-)

Daffodil Cookies to celebrate spring

15/9/2016

So happy that daylight savings have started and we can officially say that Spring is here :)
To celebrate the arrival of Spring we have created daffodil cookies and we will share how to create these gorgeous flowers, using an alternative cutter as we dont have an actual daffodil cookie cutter.

Here are the finished daffodil cookies :)
Picture
Because we don't have a daffodil cutter we used a shooting star cutter to create the cookies :)

To begin decorating the daffodil cookies, here is the step by step with picture tutorial"
Step 1: Start with flooding the entire cookie with light blue icing in medium consistency, let it dry.

Step 2: Mark the areas for the daffodils with edible food marker.
Picture
Step 3: Use medium consistency yellow icing and fill the petals of the daffodils, then fill the middle part of the daffodil with an orange colour icing and let it dry.

Step 4: Next, we use a stiff consistency icing to create the green stem and the grass and let it dry.
Picture
Step 5: Last step, once the green icing is dry, add the little flowers all around the grass and dust a little bit of green lustre dust around the grass area to give some subtle shading and a bit more dimension between the blue sky and the grass area - see picture below.
Picture
Here is the picture of the finished cookie in a platter :)

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial, Happy Spring everyone :)

Toolbox & Tools cookies for Father's Day

4/9/2016

We decided to do something a little different for Father's Day this year. We made our first 3D cookie, a toolbox cookie along with all the tools of the trade, these were made for my father in law as he is a bit of a handyman around the house.

This was inspired by Sweetopia's blog post tutorial, we downloaded the template and bought the tools cookie cutters from eBay. This is what we ended up with :)
Picture
I'm not sure if this is because its our first time creating a 3D cookie, we felt that it was quite fiddly to make and the big pieces that make up the toolbox was quite large so they were pretty heavy and pretty hard to put icing on such a large area.

We downloaded the template for the toolbox from Sweetopia's blog post, HERE.

We them with made our usual honey cookies, and these are the pieces for the toolbox
Picture
We didn't have to put icing at the bottom piece so we put the icing on the side pieces only. Because they are such a large area, its best to outline with #3 piping tip and let it dry slightly for about 5-10mins and then flood the area with red icing. Let it dry overnight. I would highly recommend to NOT move the pieces until they are completely dry to avoid the icing to crack, as they are quite heavy pieces.

Here is the four sides after the icing are completely dry and ready to assemble. We have to apply generous outline consistency icing on each side as a glue to put them together.
Picture
Next we created the tools to put inside the toolbox. We have baked the tools cookies in shapes of the hammers, pliers, spanners, screwdrivers, handsaw, and lastly a drill :)
Picture
We didn't get a chance to take progress photos of all the tool, but we did take a select few. The first one is for the hammer.

Step 1: Use yellow medium consistency icing to create the handle
Step 2: then add the grey icing for the top part of the hammer and let it dry for a few minutes
Step 3: Outline the hammer and add the thick part of the hammer with more flood icing.
Picture
Next is the screwdriver, its very simple and easy as we only need to do 2 parts.
Step 1: Use medium consistency blue icing to flood the handle.
Step 2: Use grey medium consistency icing to add the top part of the screwdriver & let it dry.
Picture
The last tool we did was the pliers cookies.
Step 1: Use medium consistency icing to create the handle
Step 2: Do the alternate part of the pliers with grey medium consistency icing - see picture below
Step 3: Flood the reminder of the area with the same grey icing and let it dry, then add the middle pin with the same grey icing in the middle - see picture below.
Picture
Here are all the tools together after they have been completed and all decorated :)
Picture
Hope that helps explain the process a little bit. Sorry we didn't get a chance to take progress photos of all the tools as we had quite a limited amount of time this time to create these. The good news is that you can always go to Sweetopia's blog for more in-depth and detail explanation on how to create these tools and toolbox.

Hope everyone had a great weekend and Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there :)

Mermaids of the sea for Alexis

22/8/2016

A special request from my dear cousin as she told me that my lovely niece loves mermaids :)
So we set out to create a special 'under the sea mermaid' set for her. This is what we came up with...
Picture
Here are the step by step tutorial on how to create a couple of these mermaids, lets start with the pink mermaid.
Step 1: outline the cookie with edible marker and start with the face and body area. Flood with skin colour icing in medium consistency (we use 20 seconds icing for this).
Step 2: Fill the hair area with brown medium consistency icing and let it dry.
Step 3: Fill the mermaid tail with a light pink icing also in medium consistency and let it dry.
Picture
Then we continue with adding the details.
Step 4: Add the waist area, the chest and the bottom of the tail with a darker pink icing also in medium consistency - see picture below with the detail.
Step 5: mark the face area so you know where to put the eyes & mouth.
Step 6: add the eyes with black icing and use a small nonpareils sugar to add the white dot in the middle of the eyes just to give it some dimension. Use black edible marker to add the mouth.
Step 7: lastly add the strands of hair with outline/stiff consistency icing and as a last touch you can add a tiny fondant flower in the hair - see picture below
Picture
Similar steps can be followed for the sea-green mermaids.

Step 1: outline the cookie with edible marker and start with the face and body area. Flood with skin colour icing in medium consistency (we use 20 seconds icing for this).
Step 2: Fill the hair area with brown medium consistency icing and let it dry.
Step 3: Fill the mermaid tail with a light sea green icing also in medium consistency and let it dry.
Picture
Step 4: add the waist area, the chest and the bottom of the tail with a darker pink icing also in medium consistency - see picture below with the detail.
Step 5: mark the face area so you know where to put the eyes & mouth.
Step 6: add the eyes with black icing and use a small nonpareils sugar to add the white dot in the middle of the eyes just to give it some dimension. Use black edible marker to add the mouth.
Step 7: lastly add the strands of hair with outline/stiff consistency icing and as a last touch you can add a tiny fondant flower in the hair - see picture below
Picture
You can also create other complimentary 'under the sea' theme like shells, starfish and mermaid silhouette like we did in this platter :)
Picture
I have it on good authority that my lovely niece loves these set of cookies so i think we can safely say its mission accomplished ;-) Have a great week everyone!

Its been a while since I've updated this blog. I'm so sorry I have been a tad busy and have been slacking a bit at updating this blog. I will try my best to do it more regularly :)

I haven't had a chance to post these cookies here yet, but I have posted a video tutorial of how to make both the watermelon & pineapple cookies in my Instagram account. Here are the finishedcookies :)
Picture
We didn't get a chance to take photo tutorial of the watermelon cookies as we made a video tutorial instead. I have put a you tube video link below, this is the first time we are trying to link up one of our videos in this blog...really hope this works! *fingers crossed!* :)
This is what the watermelon cookies looks like when we finished decorating them :)
Picture
Now, for the pineapple cookies, what can be cooler than a pineapple with pink sunglasses right? :P

The good news is we did managed to take photo tutorial, so here we go:
Started with a wet on wet technique, flood the base part of the pineapple with yellow flood consistency icing and while the icing is still wet add orange/golden flood consistency icing in polkadot patterns and let it dry.
Picture
Next we add the groovy pink sunglasses and the leaves on top:
1. With an outline consistency pink icing, pipe the sunglasses.
2. Add black flood icing in the middle of the sunglasses and while the icing is still wet add a little white line on the side for the reflective side, then add the heart shape lips.
3. Lastly, with a leaf tip piped the top part as shown below.
Picture
Here they are together after we complete the decorating steps.
Picture
So there you go, they are pretty simple to make. Hope that will encourage you to give it a go and try making these cute cookies. Hope you had a great weekend ;-)

Magical Unicorn cookies

9/7/2016

Because sometimes we just need an extra bit of magic in our lives ;-) And these cookies make me happy :)

We made these cookies for a cookie swap with another cookie decorator in Australia :) And of course Claudia has reserved one set for her teacher as a welcome back present after she away away being sick for a while...she is so sweet :)
Picture
These unicorn cookies takes a bit more time to do because of their colourful hair, but we have a step by step photo tutorial for you if you want to try making them :)

Step 1: start with the body of the unicorn, fill with medium consistency white icing (see the first photo below - on the left side). Let the base white icing dry completely.

Step 2: draw her eyes with edible marker and add the unicorn horn with a stiff consistency white icing.

Step 3: add her mouth outline & nose with white outline consistency icing. You can mark out the areas for her hair if you like, but if you want to free-hand the hair you can do that too :) - see the photo below.
Picture
Okay so while we are waiting to do the next step we prepared the icing for the unicorn hair.

This is quite fun to do but probably best to do with a fresh icing rather than the ones from the fridge as sometimes the colours can separate.

If you come across icing that the colour separated while being kept in the fridge, i would suggest re-freshing it by taking it out of the piping bag and put it into a bowl and stir with spatula until everything mixed thoroughly. You can also add a bit more icing sugar to bring a bit more life into it and thickening it a bit.
  • Prepared a piece of plastic food wrap (also known as cling-wrap) on top of your bench. Then put all the colours you want to use on top of it - see picture below on the far left side.

  • Then roll the cling wrap into a long roll (make sure there is plenty of tails on each side - see middle picture below.

  • Last step is to insert the wrapped icing into a piping bag - see last picture on the right. The when you are ready to use the icing snip the tail and put your piping tip and you are ready to go! ;-)

Note: I almost forgot to say, these icing needs to be outline consistency to make it work, and we also learned that if we put the icing in the middle (like that pink icing on the picture below) it wont show up in the end result as it will be hidden inside the roll. So next time just put the colours next to each other and roll....this way all the colours will show up nicely :)
Picture
Okay so now you have the icing ready for the unicorn hair. But  before we use that icing and proceed with that one last fun step, we painted the hoofs and the horn with gold lustre dust.

And lastly, pipe the rainbow colour icing that we have prepared for the hair and do swirly motions - see picture below :)

PS: As you can see in the unicorn hair below (picture on the right), we can't see the pink colour as its hidden in the middle as mentioned in my note above. A lesson learned for the next time ;-)
Picture
Okay so here are a closer look at the unicorns after they are all done and ready to go :)
Picture
Our next mission is to create the rainbow....because every unicorn always comes with a rainbow right? Well we think so anyway ;-)

The rainbow is reasonbably simple to make.

Step 1: Flood the cloud aread with white icing with medium consistency
Step 2: Pipe the colours of the rainbow on top (for these we chose pink, yellow & blue), let it dry
Step 3: Add the swirls on the white cloud with an outline consistency icing - see picture below
Picture
Here are a plater of rainbows, sunshine and love heart cookies...i'm pretty sure every single one of us needs this platter in our lives :)
Picture
So there you go. Hopefully this post brings a little happiness for you today, we have all the elements of magic here, sunshine, rainbows, love hearts and most importantly magical unicorns! :)

If you are going to try making these cuties please drop us a note, we would love to hear from you :) Have a magical day!

Scotty Dog Cookies

4/7/2016

Aren't these doggy the cutest? We have been wanting to make them for agesss and only got a chance to do it now. Special thanks to our friend Kate from Say it with sweetness for making it possible to make these cookies ;-)
Picture
They are fairly simple to make.
Step 1: Use medium consistency red icing to create the red scarf around his neck. To create the polkadots, drop dots of white medium consistency icing while the red icing is still wet - we call this the 'wet on wet technique'. Let it crusted over/dry for a few minutes, and add the ties on the right side of the neck - see picture below.
Picture
Step 2: Flood the remainder area with medium consistency black icing. Let it dry.

Step 3: Pipe on the details such as its nose, eyes, hairlines and jawlines underneath the nose.
Picture
That's all you need to do to finish this cute scotty dog :)

If you prefer to look at videos of how to make these cuties you can visit my instagram account. Unfortunately i can't post videos here as my blog account has a limited capability.
Here is the final look of the close ups :)

Hope you are having a fabulous restful weekend ;-)

I scream for ice cream cookies!

19/6/2016

I know we are getting into the coldness of winter here so it may be a bit weird posting ice cream and popsicles now....but there is an upside of these ice creams and popsicles, you won't get cold because they are cookies :P

We made these for Claudia's school netball fundraising this weekend, hope they will sell out ;-)
Picture
I only managed to  take photo tutorial for the popsicle, sorry we totally forgot to take pics of the the ice cream decorating progress. The popsicle is super simple to make so hopefully it will make up for it :)

They are super simple to make in 3 easy steps:
1. Fill the bottom area of the popsicle with white icing in medium consistency, let it dry.
2. fill the rest of the cookie area with your preferred icing colour, let it overlap near the bottom so it will look like melting ice - see picture below. Let it dry completely.
3. Piped 2 black dots with black icing for the eyes and draw the eye lashes with black edible marker. Add the mouth with the same black edible market and lastly add light pink icing on the cheeks as blusher.
Picture
I reckon anything looks cuter with kawaii faces on them, it just add that little bit of personality don't you think so? :)

Well, we had a bit of an accident with the blue popsicle (as you can see from the photo below the top blue popsicle snapped at the handle) but they still look really cute grouped together in all different colours though :)
Picture
And of course, we have to show you the different colour ice creams and i also love the little lollies and jellybean cookies all around them :)
Picture
Hope this super easy popsicle and ice cream cookies encourages you to give it a try. If you do try this out, please let me know how you go, i would love to hear from you :)

In the mean time, hope everyone is getting ready for a lovely weekend!

Rapunzel & Pascal Cookies {Tangled Cookies}

12/6/2016

Another attempt at creating one of the Disney princesses, this time we made Rapunzel and Pascal her chameleon :)
Picture
We don't have a cookie cutter to make Rapunzel, so we have to hand-cut her, we might get a cookie cutter made for her just in case we need to make her again in the future :)

To make Rapunzel, we start with using a skin colour icing in medium consistency. Flood her face area, neck and hands  - see the picture below on the far left side.

Then use a purple colour icing to fill her dress, we use a medium consistency icing. Wait for about 10-15mins until the icing for the dress is crusted over and add the top shoulder of the dress with the same purple colour icing - see the middle picture.

After the icing for the dress is dry, we add the light purple icing for her sleeves - see the picture below.
Picture
The next few steps are about adding the details. Mark off the area of her dress with edible marker and using an outline consistency light purple icing add the top laces of her dress and the shoulders (see the far left picture below).

Then add the bottom lines of her dress with the same purple colour in outline consistency. We also added the black icing for her eyes and using an edible marker draw her mouth.

Lastly, use a medium consistency yellow icing and fill the area for her hair. We also added a few little details such as the flick of her eyelashes with black edible marker and with a link lustre dust we add the blush on her cheek :)

The pink flowers on her hair is optional, you can either add it in or leave it if you dont want it :)
Picture
Next is how to make Pascal the chameleon, we decided to go with the simplest face using a diamond shape cutter. This original design were from Callye the Sweet Sugar Belle :)

Here is the step by step picture tutorial on how to make him in 4 simple steps:

Step 1: Flood the entire cookie with green icing in medium consistency

Step 2: Add his eyes, white icing in medium consistency and while its still wet add brown icing in the middle, and let it dry. Once the brown icing is dry add the black icing in the middle.

Step 3: With an outline consistency black icing, pipe his mouth - see picture below.

Step 4: Lastly add the details of his crest (middle forehead) and his eyebrows with an outline consistency green icing.
Picture
Here are the finished result for Pascal the Chameleon ;-)
Picture
Next is the yellow flower, we tried to make it as close as the yellow flowers in the movie Tangled.
Very Simple flower in 3 steps:

Step 1: pipe the petals with orange or yellow medium consistency icing.
Step 2: Wait approx 10mins until the petal is slighty dry then add the centre with the same icing.
Step 3: Lastly add the swirls on the petal and the middle to give it definition - see picture below.
Picture
So there you go, here is the finished result of the the flower and Rapunzel together :)
Picture
We hope you enjoyed the tutorial and if you ever decide to try making these please let us know how you go, we would really love to hear from you :)

Faith, Grace & Wisdom

27/5/2016

I really love creating these cookies :) The main important thing for me is, it's a good reminder that i need these in abundance every-single-day. The second thing is, i found it a really good practice session for me on two things: I get to practice my lettering and I get to play with lots of different moulds to create the flower accents all around the cookies :)
Picture
So to start off, flood your cookie with white flood icing, you don't have to stick with white, if you would rather have other icing colour feel free to play and experiment :)

Then you can either pipe the words directly in the middle of the cookie or you can outline them with an edible marker. Im not very good a free-hand so i found edible markers very handy to have to do things like these - see picture below. Make sure that the background icing is completely dry before you do this.

Lastly with an outline consistency icing pipe the words into the cookie - see the last picture.
We made the cookies in the same way for all 3 designs.
Picture
Then the fun begins....we just recently bought a whole bunch of moulds from eBay, and we decided to use it as flower accent for these cookies.

Umm...we might have gone a bit crazy overboard with making our flower accents....these are the collections of what we ended up with - see photo below. These were made with Pettinice fondant that we have in our pantry. You can also make them using modelling chocolate if you have some :)
Picture
I know what you were gonna say...we did go a tad 'flower frenzy' when we made these :P
These are the moulds we have to create those gorgeous flowers :)
Picture
So after we made those little fondant flowers, we just stick them on to the cookie in any way we like. No certain position, we just play with whatever we thought looks good on the cookie :)
Picture
Picture
Picture
If you have some left over fondant flowers after you have finished playing, don't throw them away. You can keep them in a container so you can use it again for your next cookie (im actually not sure how long you can keep them for, i need to google first), so i guess check them before you use it next time. They are made out of sugar so i think it should be okay but best to check first :)

Just to show you, we kept our fondant flowers in a container like this one - see below.
Picture
so there you go, we thought all the flowers goes really well as an accent in these kind of cookies.
Here are another closer look at the three cookies together :)
Picture
Hope you enjoy seeing these and that the tutorial are helpful to you. Have a great week! :)

Koala bear Cookies

25/5/2016

The best thing about being in a cookie group is to have a bunch of awesome ladies that shares your passion about cookie-ing and having a wonderful support whenever you need any help, advice or anything cookie related :)

The next best thing is the cookie swap! :) I love receiving cookies from others and I also love creating some for them. I have to send my cookies to a cookie friend in Australia so what can be more appropriate than sending Koalas right? :P
Picture
I love these nerdy koalas, i specially love the black rimmed glasses and tapped-up in the middle :) One koala has a thicker rim in the glasses as she is more geekier than the other hahaha :P

Okay so lets go over how to decorate these cuties :) Start with marking the areas of the koala with edible marker. Then using medium consistency icing fill the inner ear, chest and inner feet areas with white colour icing, and let it dry.

Next step is to put medium consistency grey icing for her face and feet, let it dry for a bit (just until the top layer icing is crusted over), then add the reminder of the grey icing into the rest of the koala (outer ear, hands and bottom) - see the picture below.
Picture
Next step is to do the grey outline all around the koala, we use outline consistency grey icing - see the first picture on the left side.

Then lastly we added the pink bow and the black rimmed glasses and her eyes with black medium consistency icing.
Picture
There you go, step by step visual of how to decorate these cuties, and here is the finished result :)

Hope you'll have a koalaties week! ;-) (sorry can't resist! :P

Eyelet Lace Cookies

We have been wanting to try making these eyelet lace cookies since we saw a video in Instagram.
So when we finally have a few spare cookies to play with we decided to give these a try :)

I love the texture of the lace part as the icing was really thin down, it sets with a light texture and made it look transparent which is really lovely. I'm not sure if you can see the texture clearly on this picture, hopefully you can 'just' see it :)
Picture
I really love the soft tones on these cookies. For these cookies we chose a soft blue background to compliment the white lace. You can create these lace on any cookie with any shape.

Here are the steps of how to make these the lace on the heart shape cookies:

Step 1: Fill the cookie with light blue flood icing and let it dry.
Step 2: With an outline consistency white icing piped the eyelet pattern on to the middle of the cookie.

We decided to go for a very simple pattern as this is our first experiment creating these cookies :)
Picture
So now the next step is to use a very dilluted/runny icing to fill the area. Use a very small amount of white royal icing and add more water to make it very runny. I've taken photos of the actual icing to show you how thin/runny the icing is, hopefully its noticeable from the photo
Picture
The next step is really fun to do, my lovely daughter loves doing this part (she is the best assistant ever!) take a paint brush and paint the area with the runny white icing - see photo below.
Picture
Even out the runny icing with the paint brush, you can keep pushing the icing along the lace areas, here is a closer look at my daughter painting the cookie with the runny icing :)
Picture
The first picture below is how the cookie looks like after you finished painting the runny icing. When you have finished that part, let it dry completely. Once it has dried and set, you will see a lovely texture that will resemble a transparent lace, it looks realy lovely. The runnier the white icing, the more rough the texture is going to set.

When the icing have dried add the dot on each side of the lace and add royal icing roses or flowers.
Picture
Making these cookies also gave us a chance to practice making royal icing roses, all we need is to cut up some baking paper into little pieces, stick them on top of a flower nail. This is what a flower nail looks like, you can twirl it around your fingers easily to create the roses.
Picture
With a tiny bit of icing piped a very stiff icing on to the top of the flower nail. Then start with piping the middle bud (see the second picture) and then continue to pipe the petals one layer at a time until it forms the shape of a rose - see picture below (please excuse the giraffe onesie in the background as my daughter was demonstrating the technique for this photos :P )
Picture
This is the finished rose, we use tip #101 for these roses. You can use tip #102 or #103 to create bigger petals or bigger roses :)
Picture
And these lot are the result of our practice to make royal icing roses...we made them in all sorts of different sizes just for practice ;-)

Its a matter of "practice makes perfect", the more you practice making them, the better and quicker you are at it :)
Picture
So there you go, once the roses are dry and set, you can keep them in an airtight container and they will last for a long time. They are very handy to store, you can use them for decorating any cookies, cupcakes or cakes.
Hope you enjoyed these as much as we enjoyed making them ;-)

Sunflowers and Butterflies cookies

My lovely massage therapist has decided to move out of wellington and i'm so gutted! >.<

She has always looked after me really well and everytime i see her (which usually means i'm either in pain or very sore) she always makes me feel better. She is such an amazing lady with a gentle soul and healing hands.

So I've decided to make some cookies to show my appreciation to her and to say thank you for being so wonderful. I tried to think of something that she will love and to brighten her day...in the end we've decided these butterflies and half sunflower cookies will be the best for her ;-)
Picture
Creating these butterflies for her was so much fun, we get to experiment with wet on wet technique and pretty pattern for their wings :)

We started with the bottom wings, outline with cream flood icing as per the first picture on the far left.

Then fill each section with different colours, we choose earth colours for these butterflies, we add brown for the bottom section, yellow for the middle and white for the top section - see the middle picture below

Then take your scribe tool (or toothpicks if you dont have a scribe tool) and drag it along from the top to the bottom of the wet icing. While the icing is still wet add a dot of brown icing on the white section of the bottom wing and white the brown icing is still wet add another dot of yellow on top - see the 3rd picture.
Picture
After we finished with the bottom wings then we do the upper wings, flood the upper area with cream flood icing. Then while its still wet add 3 yellow dots along the side of the wings. While the yellow icing is still wet add the dark brown and white on top - see the second picture. Let this dry completely

The next step is to add the middle body of the butterfly. With medium consistency brown icing pipe along the body and the head of the butterfly - see the bottom row of pictures below.

The last step is to create lines in the top wings, use brown edible pen to draw lines along the inner wings.
Picture
Here are a closer look at the butterflies together :)
Picture
For the sunflower, we had to do a bit of frankencookie-ing as we don't have the cookie cutter for it, so we had to cut the dough using a normal flower cutter, cut it in half and re-attach the top bulb.

You can see from the photo below there is a line on the top of the cookie where we had to cut and re-attached (where we did the frankencookie) :P

I totally forgot to take a photo of the cookie dough when we were cutting it so I'm showing you how to cut it with paper....its the same way as you do with cookie dough, the only difference is you cut the dough with a sharp knife instead of using scissors:)
Picture
Okay so once the dough is baked, we start with the petals. I wanted multiple petals with varying length so i marked it with an edible pen and then piped the petals alternatively with medium consistency yellow icing (or 20 second icing) and let it dry - see picture below.
Picture
Once that is done, add brown medium consistency consistency icing (or 20 second icing) for the flower bulb. And lastly add the details of the petals and add little dots on the bulb - see picture below.
Picture
Here is a closer look at the hlaf sunflowers together :)
Picture
Of course we also took a close-up picture of the thank you cookie, i love the yellow roses that we made to decorate these plaque shape cookie :)
Picture
I just gave these cookies to my amazing therapist today when we said our goodbyes, i hope she will enjoy the cookies. Thank you so much for taking good care of me Prue, if you are reading this, just know that you will be missed ;-)

Sarah's Baby Shower Cookies

18/5/2016

We made cookies for Sarah's baby shower :) It was a monkey theme in the invite as the baby will be born in the year of the monkey. So we created the cookies with the same theme, as well as the colour scheme which is brown & blue.
Picture
We took progress photo for one of our fave onesie. There are 2 ways of doing this, you can start with a white icing and flood the entire cookie with it and let it dry, or you can only flood the white icing for the top part, either way it will work. If you flood the entire area (including the bottom) you will have a thicker area for the bottom of the onesie.

The second part is to add 2 little triangle on top to create the collar, and put dark brown icing and while its still wet pipe white & light blue icing with a small tip (we used tip #1.5) - see picture below.

Then the next step is to pipe the blue tie and with an edible marker mark the area for the suspender.

The last step is to use a dark brown stiff icing, pipe the long line on each side to create the suspender and add a couple of small sugar pearl where it connects with the bottom part to give it little buttons. Lastly pipe the little fastener/snaps at the bottom of the onesie - see picture below.
Picture
For the onesies with the little monkey face in front of it, we made royal icing transfer. Its less risky to make a mistake this way, make sure you make a few extras if you ever want to make them as they are easily breakable. All you need is some baking paper and use your royal icing to create the transfer.

If you are using a picture as a guide you can put the paper with the picture underneath the baking paper so you can trace the picture that way. With these monkey we just freehand it (no picture) as it was pretty straight forward and easy. Here are the tiny monkey royal icing transfer :)
Picture
Here are the different style of onesies that we created for this set :)
Picture
How to make the baby stroller
Picture
Here they are together with the baby bottles :)
Picture
The simplest cookies in this set is probably the baby bib :) They are done in a couple of simple steps.

Step 1: Flood the cookie with blue icing and white its still wet pipe little dots of brown, white & green into the wet icing to create a polkadot pattern and let it dry.

Step 2: The second step is to use a dark brown outline consistency and pipe all the around the border and then add a small dot in between the grooves. Lastly stick one of the monkey royal icing transfer in the middle of the bib.
Picture
Here are the baby bibs cookies along with the monkey cookies :)
Picture
I love the plaque that says Baby Su, but my fave from the whole set is the little heart shape cookie with the teeny tiny baby feet :) Here is a closer look at the them together :)

Hope everyone at the baby shower like the taste of the cookies as well as the decorations :)

Pink Cats & Lamb Cookies

15/5/2016

It's funny and quite liberating when you received a one liner request like this "Can you make pink cats and lamb cookies? the rest of the details are up to you, use your imagination".

Well that was unusual, so out of curiousity I had to go back and asked "why pink cats?" I have never seen any pink cats before...so her answer was that the person receiving the cookies as a gift is crazy about cats and lamb and she also loves everything pink so she requested custom cookies of pink cats and lamb specially for the birthday girl :)

This is what we came up with and hopefully it fullfilled the brief :P
Picture
We have made the kitty kat before and the only difference is the colours and we added the roses on the ear just to give it a feminin touch to add to the pink cats. So to make the pink polkadot kitty cat you can see the tutorial HERE.

So once we have done the base pink polkadot icing (see the tutorial on how to do the polkadot icing on the link above) all we did was add the white bow and the roses.
Picture
Here is the close-up of the kitty cats cookies :)
Picture
For the lamb, we were inspired by Sweetopia's little lamb post. Here is the breakdown of the step by step decorating process.

PS: please excuse the poor lighting on the photo, with the daylight savings ending i struggled to take the progress photo with a decent light as we do our decorating in the evenings and progress to the night times. So for the next few months you are likely to get more of the poor lighting photos :P

Step 1: Start with using a white flood icing on to the face and the legs of the lamb, and let it dry.
Step 2: Use either Wilton star tip, either #14 or 16 to create the lamb's wool. We decided to use tip#16 for this one. Cover the whole body area - see picture below for details.
Step 3: Lastly draw the eyes with black edible marker and add a pink bow.
Picture
You can make these cute little lamb with any star piping tips, just to show you a comparison between the two piping tips we have - Wilton #14 and #16. They are very similar and they both will work perfectly to make these lamb, in our case we used #16.
Picture
We love making the lamb, they are so cute and fun to make! Claudia certainly had fun piping the lamb's wool and it doesn't matter if you make mistakes it wont show because the lamb's wool are thick and they are not piped in any particular way...just fill the whole body with icing :)
Picture
Lastly, we packaged them up into a gift-box ready to be given to the birthday girl :)
Picture
Really hope she likes them! Have a great day everyone! ;-)

Mother's Day Cookies

In all the excitement of all the Mother's Day activities yesterday we didn't get a chance to post our Mother's Day cookies....oh well, better late than never i suppose ;-)
We made this cookie set for my mother in law. We decided on peach and light blue and because she loves butterflies we had to include butterflies in the set :)
Picture
Here are the progress photo of how to make the roses, its fairly straight forward...flood the main rose area with peach flood icing and let it dry. Then add the petals on top (see picture below) and lastly add the leaf with green flood icing and outline the leaf with outline consistency icing.
Picture
We made them in peach and blue, here they are in a platter :)
Picture
For the butterfly, we started with cream colour flood icing in the middle of the wings, then with 'wet on wet' technique put the peach & blue icing on the wet cream colour icing (just three little dots on the side of the wings - see the picture below, and one dot on the bottom wings) then let it dry for a bit. Add the light blue icing around the border of the wings and let it dry, then lastly pipe the middle body and the antennae along with some dots and swirls to give some details in the wings (see photo below for details).
Picture
Here are the butterfly cookies complimented with the roses and heart shaped cookies :)
Picture
We also made alphabet cookies that spells "MOM" and we replaced the middle letter with one of the roses. Here is the close-up photo of the MOM cookies :)
Picture
And lastly, packaged it all up in a gift box ready to be given out as Mother's Day present :)
Picture
To all the wonderful mums out there, hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day filled with lost of love and surprises ;-)

May the 4th be with you

Its Russ' birthday today and seeing that its officially an International Star Wars day of course we had to make him Star Wars cookies :)

The hardest part was hiding these cookies from him so that we can keep it as a surprise....and it has been quite a bit of a mission to do that, but thankfully the kids have been helping me by giving me warning when daddy just about to enter the kitchen so i can keep them hidden :P

Oh, and i also have to give a special shout of thank you to my dear friend Angie, as these cookies were made from a set of cookie cutter that she sent us all the way from Canada! We cannot buy these cutter anywhere in NZ or Australia, so thank you so much Angie...they are just adorable! ;-)

These are the 'Chibi' version of Star Wars, we think they are the 'cute version' of the Star Wars' characters :) So here are the result...we have Yoda, Princess Leia, Luke, Chewie, R2D2 & 3CPO
Picture
My favorite from this set is Princess Leia, she is so cute and simple to make :) So here is the progress photos of how to make her.

Step 1: Use a brown colour 20 second icing to fill her hair/buns area :)
Step 2: Fill her face area with flesh colour icing
Step 3: Add her eyes with black icing, pull a tiny bit of the black icing on the sides of the eyes with the scribe tool to create her eyelashes. Also add her lips with red icing. You can also mark off the area where you want to put the swirls in her hair with an edible marker.
Step 4: Lastly with a stiff consistency brown icing pipe the swirls in her hair to create the look of a bun on each side and on the top - see picture below.
Picture
The next one on my favorite list is the classic R2D2, he is also reasonably simple to make and he is always been a favorite of ours ;-)

Here is the step by step progression photo on how to make him:
Step 1: Fill the bottom part with white icing, mark off the area where you want to leave un-iced with edible marker.
Step 2: Fill the top part with grey icing, apart from the marked areas.
Step 3: With blue icing create the markings on his body - see picture below. We use a red sugar pearl for the red dot you see in the middle part.
Step 4: Pipe the finishing touches - see picture below.
Picture
Here are the set of character's together :)
Picture
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to take a photo of the cookies all packaged-up in the gift box as i had to do this in a hurry and I had to go away for a work trip today. However I did get a very lovely message this morning while i was boarding the plane from him saying that he loves it and he thinks the cookies were amazing...so i think overall we did good ;-)

Hope you have had a great day today and may the fourth be with you!
