Turbo Birthday Cake

My little boy is turning 5, and when we asked him what he wants for his birthday cake he said confidently "I want a Turbo cake mummy!". So seeing that its a milestone birthday for him as he will be a school boy soon, i decided better get cracking on learning and planning on how we are going to make him a Turbo birthday cake.

So i talked to a friend of mine about the birthday plan, and fortunately for us she knew a brilliant cake maker (who happened to be a good friend of hers) and she said she will asked her friend if she will be willing to give us a crash course on cake decorating using fondant. And she said yes! Woohoo....isn't it great when we have wonderful people in our lives that are willing to share their knowledge and skills with us? :)

So anyway, after a weekend of a crash course of how to decorate a cake using fondant we decided to give it a try ourseleves. We gave ourselves plenty of grace time so in case something goes horribly wrong we still have time to either fix it (if its fixable) or if all else fail, then we'll redo it again lol :P

Let me show you the finished cake result before showing you what we did in the baking & decorating process...tadaaa! We think it looks pretty good considering this is our first official cake that we did all by ourselves. In fact it doesn't matter what other people said, we are so darn proud of it :)

So this is what we did...we made a very basic chocolate cake and then coated the cake with butter cream icing, then we rolled out the fondant to the size of the cake...here is the pictures to give you a visual of how we covered the cake with fondant.
Then the fun part begins....we get to decorate it :) Here is my daughter rolling out the fondant and cutting them out to decorate the cake with black and white racing stripes all around the bottom of the cake.

Here is the cake with the racing stripes all done, she is smoothing out the top of the fondant before adding more fondant decorations.

We have made the Turbo cake topper the week before, thanks to the help of 'You Tube Video', they give us a step by step instruction of how to make Turbo Cake Topper. Here is the little turbo ready to go on top of the cake.

We wanted a racing banner to stand on top of the cake which we also made the week before in preparation and planning of the cake. We needed the time to ensure the fondant for the banner will harden and will be able to stand up nicely on top of the cake.

Then we added some star decorations on top, a number 5 fondant and a 'Happy Birthday' writing on top of the racing stripes. Here is the finished cake...with my daughter proudly showing off the finished result
