Its the last day of Easter, so we just want to wish you a Happy Easter and also share the last of our Easter cookies that we made just for our family :) We didn't take any progress photos of any of these cookies as they were made in between of making other cookies from spare cookies that we have. Just so that we still have some Easter cookies to share for our family. We also got this really cute small bunny plate and had to take photos of the cookies with it :) Hope everyone has been having a wonderful Easter long weekend!

We didn't get a chance to make a lot of Easter cookies this year as it happen to fall around the time of a lot of kids birthdays, so we've been busy making birthday cookies these past weeks. However, we did have a stash of chocolate cookies that we have saved up and we managed to sneaked-in these egg nests and one bunny cookie in between of decorating other cookies :) We've seen these egg nests cookies around, so we want to try making them. Its a bit out of proportion but seeing that its out first egg nest cookies we are still happy with it :) We started with flooding the egg shape cookies with 'sea green' icing colour, you can use light blue or turquoise if you don't have this colour, they all will work with the brown tones. Then use a brown edible marker to draw the tree and where the nest will sit. We want to use 3 eggs inside so unfortunately the nest ended up a bit bigger than the original plan. We made the nest as a royal icing transfer, i will post the picture of just the nest below the decorating progress photo just to show you . This is the step by step progression photo. Here is the royal icing transfer as it dries out before we put the mini chocolate speckled eggs into it. Make sure you piped the icing to create a wider opening on top to make it easier for the eggs to nestle into it. If your opening is too narrow you will only fit either 1 or 2 eggs only. See photo below. So it doesn't matter how you piped the icing to make the nest, it depends n what you want to have, you can have only 1 egg or 2 eggs or 3 eggs in the nest, you can piped it according to what you need :) Here are the samples of what we have with different quantity eggs in the nest. Have a play with the icing to create the nest, i used a very stiff consistency icing to make these. Just keep piling the icing on top to create the nest look :) That's all you need to do and when they have dried you can stick them on top of your cookie with a little bit of royal icing.
Have a great Easter Sunday! Hope everyone is enjoying their extra long weekend and having quality family time ;-) My boy turns 6 today, and when he requested special birthday cookies how can we refuse? :) He told me he wants 'Plants vs Zombies' cookies, its a game that he plays in the iPad with his dad each day, apparently there is a 'daily event' that you have to do in the game that earns you points *insert roll eyes emoticon here* boys and their toys...some things never change I guess :P So Logan and I sat down together and I asked him to choose a few of his favorite characters from the game....here are the characters that he has chosen :) And as you can see here, a very happy boy indeed with his birthday cookies....worth all the trouble ;-) Now i really tried documenting how to make these cookies but I had to race thru them as i'm working on them alongside another set of cookies for a dear friend of mine for another birthday this week. Apparently March is a very busy month for birthdays! Anyway, I managed to take the before photos of the characters...here they are with base white icing and hand drawn with edible markers. I took a photo of some of the characters while i was putting green icing on their green leaves & stalk. But after that i was too busy trying to finish of the cookies in time that i totally forgot to take any further progress photos. Here they are in mid-progress.... And here are the characters after they are all done and completed :) And here are the whole set of cookies in the gift box ready to be given to the birthday boy :) Happy birthday Logan, we love you lots like jellytots! :)
This is our first time making mermaids, we have been wanting to try this out for a while but never got a chance to do it until now. These batch of cookies were made from strawberry cookies recipe from Patty Mac Cookies, we had the previllege to have her as guest in our house for a weekend of cookie decorating get-together :) She is a very talented lady and also very knowledgeable in cookie decorating stuff, the things that we have learned from her is so totally invaluable. Thank you Patty, you are so awesome! ;-) To make these cuties, we start with filling in face and the tail area. We use skin colour icing for the face (a bit of ivory and a smidgen of pink) and we use "sea green" Progel food colouring for the tail area. Then mark the areas for her body and fill in with the same skin colour icing, let ir dry. The next step is to flood the area for her hair, we used 'Chestnut' progel food colouring and with a stiff icing outline her hair stands. Next we added the white flower (this is a royal icing transfer that we have stashed away) and then add the texture for her tail area. The last step is to add the pink shells on her chest area and paint the tail with a combination of turquise green and yellow gel colours. So that is the step by step decorating progress that i managed to take pictures off...there are a few missing steps that i wasn't able to take a photos as I was in the process of experimenting and trying out new things, hence this is my first mermaid cookies :)
Hope everyone is having a great midweek and that the rest of the week will go smoothly ;-) These Batman cookies are probably ther fastest turn around cookies we've made so far. We had a bit of a mis-communication via email so it was a bit rushed but we are happy that we managed to finish them on time for the birthday party :) We also used our new toy for this cookies, we just recently got a new dehyrator and it cuts down the drying time so we dont have to wait around for so long. We just love it and wished we had gotten it sooner! :P These cookies are reasonably simple to make BUT i didn't realised how much pressure it was to pipe perfect oval/circle into a cookie until this order! The black border around the cookies were pretty hard to get perfectly oval...i realised half way thru piping those black icing that I was holding my breath the whole time my piping bag was going around the cookies LOL :P So here are the step by step progress: STEP 1: We used black outline consistency icing for thhe border. Here they are after the black border was piped....you can see the mistakes i made but luckily it will be covered by the yellow icing so you wont see it in the finished result :) STEP 2: Flood the cookie with yellow icing the trickiest party is getting the right yellow colour....no matter how many times we re-mixed the icing (we did it 3 different times) to get the right shade the cing sets a bit darker than when we originally mix it. Here they are in process of drying... STEP 3: Now its time to put the Batman logo on top. We marked the are for the black icing to go to with edible marker to make it easier to pipe and flood at the same time. Here they are ready to be iced... STEP 4: Use 15-20 second icing for the black bat on these cookies, its easier this way so we can just use one icing with one consistency to pipe the Batman logos onto the cookies. Last thing to do is packaging, individually wrapped in cellophane with personalised tags so that it will be easy to put them into party loot bags :) So there you go, just 4 simple steps but requires a lot of concentration from us to get it looking right.
We hope the cookies will be a wonderful treat for the birthday party this weekend :) I have been wanting to do these cookies since we took the kids to watch the Peanuts Movie a few weeks ago. And finally had some down time to get it done as we have been busy with a lot of things going on. My personal favorite is the Snoopy on the top left, which one is your favorite? ;-) These cookies were so much fun to make, and because they are on a rectangle cookies you dont have to own any particular cookie cutters! Sweet! ;-) So we started off with flooding the cookies with a white base icing and let it dry. When the base icing is dry use an edible pen or marker to draw the characters on top of the white icing. These will act as a guide as you decorate your cookies - see the picture below. Now on to the hardest part of the decorating process....airbrushing time! I found this to be the hardest part as im still learning how to use it properly. I just got my airbrush tool from eBay and have been practising how to use it but still have a lot to learn on how to handle it properly. For me its hard to get an even distribution of airbrush colours all around the cookies. Just a side note from my learning experience of using the airbrush, use it in a good light. Don't be like me and start using it at night when you can't even see the colours spraying out! lol >.< We mixed 1/3 orange & 2/3 yellow airbrush colours and put it into the airbrush cup. Spray all around the cookies and be sure to start off with light spray as you can layer it up to build the colour. Okay so once the airbrushing are done, we can start decorating with icing and painting gel colouring. Lets start with the simplest one - Charlie Brown cookie. Start with using skin colour icing for his head area, wait for a few minutes until it dries a bit and add his ear, neck and arm - see picture below. Then fill in the rest of his yellow top and the black chevron in the middle of his top. Lastly add his nose and draw his face with edible markers. Next is Snoopy on top of his red house :) Start off with piping the red house in alternate to create a dimension on the red house. Then add the green grass underneath, let it dry. Add Snoopy on the top and outline the grooves of the red house with black edible marker. Lastly paint the blade of the grass underneath the red house with gel colouring. Snoopy & Charlie Brown Cookie - start off with skin colour icing and let it dry. Add his brown shoes and Snoopy's head & legs with white icing, let it dry. Add the reminder of the details as per photo below. There is really no hard and fast rule as to which part of the icing we need to do first. I found the best way to learn is just to try things out, experiment with lots of different way and most of all have fun with it ;-)
We can finally blogged these cookies as they have finally arrived at their destination in Canada today :) We made these cookies specially for Angie & Ben :) I was told that their sons loves Star Wars and after seeing the latest movie we just knew we wanted to try making the new BB8 Android with this set :) Seeing that we don't have BB8 cookie cutter we have to be a bit creative and do a bit of frankencookie-ing. Some of you might not know what 'frankencookie' means...well, it's when you take two or more cookie shapes and put them together (before baking) to make an original cookie shape! And that's how the term came to be lol :P Okay so to make BB8 we need a 2 different size circles, Once they are baked we can start with flooding them with white icing and let it dry. Then start with For Darth Vader, we actually have a fondant cutter in his shape as we used it for my dear hubby's birthday cake last year, however when we compare him with the Stormtrooper cutter that we got given (Thanks to Patty Mac Cookies for gifting it to us all the way from Sydney :P) we found that Darth is a bit too small. Here is a quick comparison picture of the two cutters :) So we were looking at alternatives...after digging our cookie cutter drawers we found a onesie cutter that could work, we turn it upside down and a bit of a snip on top...viola, Darth Vader! :) To decorate Darth, its pretty simple, flood the cookie with black icing and let it dry. We mark the areas for his mask with edible marker and then using a stiff grey icing pipe all the details of his mask. For the Stormtropper we mark off the area for the eyes and the bottom of the mask with an edible marker. Then flood the area with white icing and let it dry. After the white base icing is dry then start piping the details of the mask with outline consistency black icing. So one set of cookies will have a Stormtrooper, Darth Vader, BB8 & a round name plaque :) So there you go, we hope they will be thoroughly enjoyed by the boys :) I'm amazed that they arrived totally intact with no damages, so totally awesome! Hope you like them Jaden, Devin & Tristan! ;-)
